So the unicorn birthday party was back in October and I figured I should post some photos before her next one rolls around…better late than never, right?
Here is the invitation and a photo of my impromptu light box that I used to make them. Only big mistake was the one ear being inside out – oops.
I constructed a unicorn pinata out of an oatmeal container, which I thought was a brilliant idea because I could simply take the plastic lid off the rear end of the unicorn to fill it with candy. Yeah, that part worked like magic; however, the whole construction process took pretty much forever. Good news is that I didn’t buy a single thing to make it; just used stuff from around the house and the kids art supplies. I would do the oatmeal pinata thing again if I was throwing a “plain tube” or “cylinder” themed party. One tip though – slice the container in several places with a serated knife if the kids hitting it are going to be small. It will make breaking it a bit easier. Here are a few picks. (I took a ton of the process, but after seeing the finished product, I really don’t think the details are worth showing…)
Then, I made a “stick the horn on the unicorn” game from felt. This was easy and I’d do it again (and have). It took all of five minutes. Really. And the kids loved it (of course the winner received a “unicorn horn” sucker!).
It can double as a pegasus…
…a fair lady…
…a pack unicorn…
…and the winner is…!
We also made unicorn cookies as party favors. When I say “we”, I mean the girls helped; however, you can’t fault me for not serving theirs…
(yes, she is squirting the gel directly into her mouth)
…and yes, there really is a cookie under there somewhere…
And, of course there was a unicorn cake! I made it by baking a double batch of brownies in a large, shallow pan. Then, I carved it into a unicorn head; frosted it; and used trix cereal with butter and marshmallows for the mane. It was inspired by this and this (scroll down).
and for a couple of gifts, I made a super cute rainbow scarf like this one; a marker roll to go with an awesome unicorn coloring book; and I purchased a really cute purple unicorn shirt from a vendor on etsy that I forgot to take a photo of, but it’s folded under the scarf…(found it!)
